Many individuals who have psychic experiences are reluctant to share them due to fears that they will be thought less of or misunderstood. The aim of this presentation is to shed light on psychic stigma and its various manifestations from the impact on individuals who have psychic experiences to the scientists who study this area of human functioning and how this research is viewed. The various underlying contributants to psychic stigma will be explored with the goal of finding ways to move beyond stigmatization.
In this presentation Dr. Nachman will discuss:
1) how her interest in this area evolved and why she feels this is an important topic to discuss
2) the impact of psychic stigma on an individual level
3) the impact of psychic stigma on a professional/academic level
4) the factors that promote psychic stigma (religious, societal, scientific biases, mental health stigma)
The talk will conclude with a discussion of ways to move beyond stigmatization.
